The material in detail

UV printing on brushed aluminium and steel produces colour without canvas texture โ€” sharp, contemporary, and built to last. Aluminium is light enough to ship internationally without damage: when photographer Pieter Henket needed prints for an exhibition deep in the Congo, Glastrix chose aluminium specifically because "glass was too heavy and fragile, and acrylic is plastic, which does not belong there." Steel offers a slightly warmer tone; both are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. UV ink is cured directly into the metal surface โ€” no laminate, no peeling, 5-year guarantee. White-label fulfilment from 1 piece, 48h from Berlin. From gallery photography to outdoor signage, from office installations to branded merchandise โ€” aluminium and steel are the materials of choice when permanence, shatterproof durability, and light weight are all non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between aluminium and steel for UV printing?

Both produce vivid, durable prints. Brushed aluminium gives a cooler, industrial finish with a slight metallic sheen; steel has a warmer tone. For outdoor applications, aluminium is preferred due to its corrosion resistance.

Can metal prints be used outdoors?

Yes. UV ink is weather-resistant. For long-term outdoor use, specify this when requesting a quote โ€” Glastrix will advise on the appropriate metal grade and surface treatment.

Why UV on aluminium instead of Dibond or Forex for signage?

Dibond and Forex are composite boards with a plastic core. Glastrix prints on bare aluminium, which is lighter per unit area, fully recyclable, and produces a more premium aesthetic. UV ink cures directly into bare metal; Dibond and Forex require surface preparation and produce a less rich colour depth for art and photography.

Why choose metal over glass for photography?

Metal is lighter, shatterproof, and easier to ship internationally. Aluminium is particularly suited for large-format photography exhibitions, public installations, and any application where weight or fragility is a concern โ€” as demonstrated by the Congo Tales project.

What file format is needed for metal printing?

High-resolution PDF or PNG at 300 dpi minimum. Glastrix reviews every file before printing and will flag issues before the job goes to press.
